In many ways the police station Lobo called home was much like the human equivalent. The fae constabulary were, after all, based on the human concept of law. It was an older building of brick and mortar salvaged once the province moved to the area. Any human who happened to stumble across Precinct 214 would find the usual signs of bureaucracy, stale coffee, and the sweat of desperation clinging to its walls and floors.
Norbert, the three-armed cuegle working the front desk, shot Lobo a curt nod as he walked by. A pair of seven-foot ogres wearing matching leather vests and tweed slacks came down the hall toward Lobo. Bodyguards? Their client was tucked safely between them, a bespectacled fae with wisps of hair curled against the sides of his bald head. His pointed nose was held firmly up in the air as they passed. Lobo moved to the side of the hall without breaking stride, giving room for the massive ogres to march. The closest one snarled down at him, squeezing its gargantuan orange fist until the bones cracked audibly across the echoing corridor.
What are a pair of thugs like that doing here? Lobo wondered, ignoring the slight. It was not unusual for ogres to take on jobs as bodyguards, but that kind of patronage was usually reserved for the upper echelon of fae elite. It took a lot of money to feed and house one of those insatiable behemoths. He decided whatever business they had at the constabulary was well above his pay grade.
The office space detectives used was fairly empty, as usual, with most of the werewolves out and about the province on open cases. Desks piled with paperwork and personal trinkets dotted the larger open room, each set back-to-back in pairs. That way it was easier for partners to work and discuss their cases.
Lobo planned to be in and out before anyone could wonder what he was up to. Things would be much easier to explain that way. Act now and beg for forgiveness later was a motto he enjoyed.
âGood to see you finally dragged your ass in today.â Doule was sitting with his feet propped on his own desk, reading a report he had just taken the time to pen. He playfully twirled his quill across four fingers and then back again as he read. He did not bother to look up at Lobo. âUp late with the tourist?â
âWhatâs with the Bobbsey Twins?â Lobo thumbed over his shoulder.
âWho knows? Ogres brought in some representative a little while ago. Been with the chief ever since.â Doule slapped down the parchment and crossed out a line with his quill. Then he turned his chair to Logan. âCâmon, man, why you holding out? Howâd it go with that girl?â
Lobo thought of Lanie. âSheâsâ¦confusing.â Ever since he met her, she had thrown off his game. At first, he thought of Lanie as nothing other than some naïve city dweller who was about as exciting as watching paint dry. She certainly had the librarian shut-in look down.
